On Thursday 10th February 2022, the eKitabu team held a teacher training virtual connect, with teachers from different schools in mainstream and special needs in Kenya. The teachers were part of the three cohorts who were trained in 2021 on UDL. This was a feedback session on how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessible digital content have impacted teaching and learning in their classroom. We asked teachers a set of questions on how UDL has been integrated into teaching and learning in their classroom, what are the best practices in using digital devices in the classroom, What are the major enablers and barriers to using digital content in the classroom, and what is the best way to integrate UDL in the classroom. Here are a few of the teachers' voices from the virtual connect:“The teacher training has been very useful. I have incorporated the UDL training that I learned last year in my school and It has really helped improve the performance of my students. We also use Kahoot! In our classes to make the lessons interesting” Vincent Makaya, Lower Kihara Primary School teacher, Kiambu County.“We have embraced the use of content from the KaiOS device that eKitabu gave us. We have different digital content in the device which we use in lower classes in teaching English and Kiswahili. This has been so helpful because most of our learners didn’t know how to read and write.” Jemima Akoth, Kibos Primary School teacher, Kisumu County.“Our learners have been able to manipulate the computers and are able to switch off and on and open the eKitabu app to read a book. Learners who are visually impaired use headphones to listen to storybooks and those with low vision can use the large font.” Tumaini Kombo, Likoni School for the Visually Impaired teacher, Mombasa County.“Through the parent support groups, we encourage the parents of special needs children to form support teams so that it becomes easier for them as they share experiences. We also use such structures to reach out to them to create awareness of digital learning and help us to incorporate it at home.” Ruth Samoei, Kapkoros Fam Primary School teacher, Uasin Gishu County.“I have integrated UDL in my classroom by using experiments, demonstrations, and practicals in lessons plan. This includes the use of pictures, videos, and games in teaching and learning to reduce barriers to learning. It is important to provide appropriate support, making reading materials equally accessible to all learners by presenting the same content in varying materials.” Samson Lepatoiye, Uaso Rongai Primary School in Samburu County.eKitabu UDL teacher training program is part of the Africa Publishing Innovation Fund (APIF) project, a four-year, USD 800,000 fund provided by Dubai Cares, a UAE-based global philanthropic organization, and administered by the IPA. The decision was to incentivize learning innovations to help African students pursue their education following the confinement measures imposed worldwide in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Around 190 countries had to close schools and universities, affecting more than 1.5 billion school-aged children – around 90% of the world’s student population. For more information about the UDL teacher training contact support@ekitabu.com
