Dear Friends,Asanteni sana to all who joined us for the eKitabu experience during Nairobi International Virtual Book Fair at the end of September. As a member of Kenya's publishing community, eKitabu showcased live events: Digital Essay Competition 2020 Prizegiving, the Content Development Challenge for Publishers, and our latest innovation to include all children in learning to read at home: Digital Story Time. We were thrilled and grateful that Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) recognized our efforts with the “Best Interactive Stand” award at NIBF 2020.On Thursday 24^th we awarded the 2020 Digital Essay Competition (DEC) winners and finalists for Primary and Secondary schools during the 8th annual DEC Prizegiving. This year we received 1,886 online essays. That's three times the number we had in the first year we ran DEC, 8 years ago. While the overall entries were lower this year, in 2020 we have the largest number of schools ever in a single year and we received entries from all 47 counties of Kenya which we've only had once before now. All winners will receive computing devices, scholarship money, and certificates. Teachers of winning schools will also be rewarded with certificates and gift vouchers.As I read this year's essays answering the 2020 question: How is technology helping you, your family and your community during the coronavirus pandemic? it occurred to me that one sure way to make education more inclusive and more equitable is trying—even in the face of the pandemic, remote learning challenges, and school reopening—if we try to make education more inclusive and improve learning for all children, then we will learn how to do it pamoja. I congratulate all students, teachers, parents, and caregivers who tried this year, including those who found a way from all 47 counties of Kenya and from 430 schools: to write, to create, and to enter DEC 2020.
