The impact of AI on learning is growing. Teachers everywhere face challenges coping with, controlling, and integrating AI in learning, both on the level of theory and of practice. In our team we’ve experimented with AI extensively. Many reflections spring to mind. I reckon our successes, failures, and lessons learned up to here would make a good note (n.b. Amon and Will who co-write this letter). Parallels too, such as the rise of the commercial Internet beginning in 1993. For now, one reflection in passing, a scruple before the feast: who among us would say AI, in its pervasive, present-day form, mirabile dictu, has accountability?
Now to learning. One burgeoning field where AI, machine learning, coding, 3D fabrication, problem-solving, and teamwork all combine in a happy alchemy is robotics. In February, our team led by Kevin Irungu and Chipurobo colleagues held an AI and Robotics training in collaboration with Microsoft at Alliance Girls High School, Kiambu County, during their science symposium. Highlights:
"The best part is that you get to watch your design come to life. I'm curious to know who thought of making such a wonderful and convenient device—the 3D printer. I was able to learn about wiring and how to use plastic in a way that won't harm the environment," Nelly Wairimu, Form 3 student, Alliance Girls High School"
STEM workshops shape students’ views, broaden career horizons, and inspire tech careers. Girls have vast opportunities in AI and robotics, from solving real-world challenges to innovating solutions. Mentorship, resources, and role models keep them engaged. The students' enthusiasm and teamwork showcased their potential, breaking gender stereotypes and building confidence!" Mr. Waswa Wanyonyi, Computer Teacher & Patron, Robotics Club, Alliance Girls High School
The energetic participation of young women in robotics learning and the STEM subjects that underpin it loudly and proudly augurs a future where technology makers are diverse and everywhere. As we celebrated International Women’s Month in March, we were glad to recognize and support women in tech on their paths. If your school is interested in having an AI and Robotics workshop, please reach out to us at support@ekitabu.com.
Warmest regards,
